Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's first efforts to be famous in the mainstream were unsuccessful. Two record labels signed her and then removed her from the market before she'd made any music. Capitol Records released Perry's Ur So Gay EP in 2007, which received little attention for its jolly frivolous title track. I Kissed a Girl, a confident song about her curiosity over sexuality and a catchy electronic-pop beat, was a big splash in the following years. It was an unpopular song and critics were critical of it for encouraging same-sex relationships and others claimed that it portrayed a racy scene which appealed to men's fantasies regarding female sexuality. However, the mix of polished and titillating melody contributed to the fact that I Kissed a Girl become a top hit throughout the world, driving the sales of her album One of the Boys (2008). The sharp, bouncy second single was also very popular. The album Perry wrote for herself has sold over three millions copies in the United States.
